1-on-1 PTE Mentorship vs Monthly PTE Cohort: Which Is Right for You?

    17 min read

You have a PTE target. Now you need to decide how to prepare: private coaching built around you, or a small group with a regular timetable?

The important difference is not simply the price or the number of hours. With 1-on-1 mentorship, the live coaching time is private and the plan follows your needs. With the Monthly PTE Cohort, you follow a shared four-week programme, with group lessons and an included individual diagnostic review.

PTE School is Melbourne-based and has helped 5,000+ students across 49 countries. We offer both approaches because students need different kinds of support—not because everyone should buy the same package.

This guide explains how each works, what the fees buy and which questions to ask before choosing.

Quick answer: consider 1-on-1 PTE mentorship if you need individual correction, an agreed private schedule or focused preparation before a nearby exam. Consider the Monthly PTE Cohort if you want broad preparation, a regular group routine and can attend its timetable. If you are unsure, start with a free 30-minute 1-on-1 PTE strategy session with Hafiz.

At a glance: private PTE coaching vs a small-group cohort

A cohort is a group that starts together and follows the same programme. It is not a private mentorship package at a lower price.

Sixteen group hours are not sixteen private hours. Both involve live teaching, but the trainer's attention is used differently. In the cohort, explanations and discussion are shared. In mentorship, your purchased lesson time is private. The cohort's individual diagnostic review is a separate inclusion.

    How 1-on-1 PTE mentorship works

Mentorship is private, hour-based coaching. Your trainer reviews what you actually do—not just the score you hope to reach—and helps you practise a more effective response.

The process is straightforward: review your work → identify the difficulty → practise a correction → check whether you can apply it independently.

    StageWhat happensHow it helps
Understand your starting pointDiscuss your target, exam history and available study time; review a score report or identify what needs assessingAvoids building a plan around an assumed score
Choose a starting packageAgree on useful coaching hours and the tasks needing attentionConnects your spending to a purpose rather than an arbitrary hour count
Work together livePractise relevant tasks and discuss your own answersMakes feedback specific to your speaking, writing or answer choices
Practise between lessonsComplete agreed homework and submit responses for feedbackHelps you apply advice without the trainer beside you
Review and adjustCheck recurring difficulties and change the focus where neededKeeps the plan connected to your current work

Feedback can include text, audio and video explanations during your agreed support window. Confirm that window before paying: ongoing feedback does not mean unlimited booked lessons or permanent support.

Private coaching also does not mean ignoring every skill that has already reached your target. Some PTE tasks contribute to more than one skill, and a previous score does not guarantee the same result next time. Your trainer can prioritise the biggest difficulties while keeping relevant skills in practice.

    When mentorship is worth considering

    • You understand the exam but keep making the same mistake.
    • Your skills need different amounts of attention.
    • You want detailed feedback on your own recordings or written responses.
    • The cohort timetable does not fit your work or family commitments.
    • Your exam is approaching and you need to discuss a focused plan.

A first-time learner can choose mentorship too. A repeat candidate can still benefit from a cohort. Exam history alone does not decide the right format.

How the Monthly PTE Cohort works

The cohort gives a small group a shared preparation routine: four weeks, two live Zoom classes a week, two hours per class.

Alongside the 16 group hours, the programme includes:

    • One 30-minute 1-on-1 diagnostic review in week one.
    • A WhatsApp study group.
    • Class recordings for review.
    • Paid-member learning-portal access during the cohort and for 14 days after it ends.

This is time-limited cohort access, not a permanent public portal membership.

    What the four weeks cover

The outline below explains the programme's broad structure. Practice examples are illustrative; check the actual outline for the intake you want to join.

WeekProgramme focusExample of useful practice after class
1Diagnostic review and SpeakingReview a recording and practise the speaking habits identified in your review
2WritingRework a summary or essay, checking relevance, organisation and task requirements
3Reading and ListeningExplain why an answer is correct or incorrect, then revisit the difficult tasks
4Mock and skills-profile reviewReview remaining difficulties and decide what needs attention before the real exam

The value is not only hearing an explanation once. A timetable encourages regular practice; recordings let you revisit a demonstration; other learners' questions can reveal something you had not considered.

However, watching a recording is not the same as participating live. Do not assume a missed class becomes a private catch-up lesson.

    Registration, confirmation and payment protection

New intakes are planned monthly, but dates and availability must be checked on the Monthly PTE Cohort page. Do not plan your exam around an unconfirmed intake.

    1. Check the intake details. Read the timetable, fees, early-bird deadline and registration cutoff.
    2. Reserve if registration is open. An unpaid seat hold lasts up to 48 hours, but ends sooner if the registration cutoff arrives. After the cutoff, new applicants can join the waitlist or register future interest rather than receive a new hold.
    3. Pay using the supplied bank-transfer instructions and reference. Follow the deadline shown for your reservation.
    4. Wait for confirmation. The default minimum is six paid students. The team confirms whether the cohort will run at the cutoff; an unpaid reservation does not count toward that minimum.

Your payment is protected. If the cohort does not run, paid students choose: move to the next available cohort, use their payment as 1-on-1 mentorship credit, or receive a full refund. The team handles the choice. A full intake may offer a waitlist; a page without open dates may offer future-interest registration.

PTE coaching cost: what are you paying for?

All examples below are in Australian dollars (AUD) and use the approved standard PTE rate card. Cohort defaults are $349 early bird and $399 standard; the intake page supplies the actual offered price and deadline.

    1-on-1 mentorship rate card

The package band applies to every hour, rather than charging different rates to successive hours. The best-price rule can reduce the total at a boundary.

Package sizeBase hourly bandExample payable total
    1 hour$1201 hour: $120
    2–4 hours$804 hours: $320
    5–8 hours$705 hours: $350; 8 selected hours: $540 under the best-price rule
    9–15 hours$609 hours: $540; 10 hours: $600; 14 or 15 selected hours: $800 under the best-price rule
    16–30 hours$5016 hours: $800; 20 hours: $1,000

Best-price examples: 8 selected hours cost the same as 9 ($540). Likewise, 14 or 15 selected hours cost the same as 16 ($800). The calculator offers an upgrade to the larger package at no extra cost; you choose whether to add the hours. The extra hours are not silently added to your booking.

    The comparison that matters most

Five private hours and the early-bird cohort cost almost the same, but buy different kinds of help.

    Similar spendingWhat you receiveUseful when…
$350: 5-hour mentorshipFive private coaching hours, with the agreed personal practice and feedback supportYou need individual work on a defined set of difficulties
$349: early-bird cohortSixteen group hours, one 30-minute private diagnostic review, recordings and cohort supportYou want a broader shared programme and can follow its timetable

At the standard cohort fee, $399 is $401 less than a 16-hour private package at $800. At the early-bird fee, $349 is $451 less. That is a fee comparison—not an equal-attention comparison or evidence that either option will produce a better result.

There is no automatic rule that a beginner needs group classes or a repeat candidate needs private coaching. Choose according to your current work, learning preferences, schedule and budget.

Three example learners: how the decision changes

These are fictional examples, not student results or promises about the hours required.

    Example 1: a first-time learner who wants a routine

    DetailExample
SituationWorks regular office hours, has not taken PTE before and hopes to sit in eight weeks
NeedUnderstand the task types and build a consistent practice routine
Option to exploreMonthly PTE Cohort, if its actual timetable fits and the intake is confirmed
WhyBroad shared preparation may suit the need better than starting with one narrow topic
Cost example$349 early bird or $399 standard
Important checkFinishing the cohort is not proof of readiness; allow time to practise and review

Example 2: a repeat candidate with a recurring writing difficulty

    DetailExample
SituationHas taken PTE before; Writing remains below the required score; exam is in three weeks
NeedReview actual responses and identify whether content, task requirements or language needs work
Option to explore1-on-1 mentorship, after discussing the starting focus
WhyIndividual responses can become the centre of the lesson rather than one example in a group
Cost example5 private hours cost $350; 9 cost $540—not an estimate of the hours this learner needs
Important checkWriting receives contributions from integrated tasks too; an essay-only plan may miss relevant practice

Example 3: a learner who likes groups but wants closer speaking feedback

    DetailExample
SituationWants broad preparation and feels uncertain about speaking responses
NeedA shared routine, with individual review before deciding whether extra help is necessary
Option to exploreCohort first; optional private coaching if a useful need is identified
WhyThe included diagnostic review can inform the next decision rather than buying extra hours in advance
    Cost exampleStandard cohort $399 + 4 eligible member coaching hours $288 = $687
Time breakdown16 group hours + 4 additional private hours, plus the included 30-minute diagnostic review

Can you combine the cohort with 1-on-1 coaching?

Yes. Paid cohort members are eligible for 10% off extra 1-on-1 coaching during the cohort and for 14 days afterward. Confirm eligibility and availability before booking. The discount applies to additional coaching, not the cohort seat fee.

Optional private hoursStandard package totalEligible member totalWith $349 early-bird cohortWith $399 standard cohort
    4$320$288$637$687
    5$350$315$664$714
    9$540$486$835$885

The cohort's included diagnostic review is already part of the programme. These extra hours are optional, additional private lessons—not required bundles or a promise of reaching your target.

Receiving a member discount also does not mean you can automatically cancel a running cohort and exchange it for mentorship. If your plans change, discuss the applicable terms with the team. The payment-protection choices above concern a cohort that does not run.

How each approach helps—and your part in it

Preparation difficultyHow mentorship can helpHow the cohort can helpYour part
Practising without knowing what is wrongReview your actual responses privatelyLearn the approach in class and discuss your starting needs in the diagnostic reviewSubmit work and act on feedback
Understanding advice but not applying it consistentlyRevisit the difficulty with individual correctionRewatch demonstrations and practise the approachTest whether you can apply it to a new response
Losing momentumAgree on sessions and personal practiceFollow a timetable and group study rhythmMake time between classes
Not knowing what to work on nextAdjust the plan to your current workUse the shared outline and final review to identify next stepsDo not treat attendance as proof of readiness

Coaching can make preparation more focused. It cannot guarantee a Pearson score, a first-attempt pass or a visa outcome. Your result depends on your performance in the real test.

If your goal relates to migration, professional registration or university admission, confirm the exact current requirements with the responsible authority or institution. Different purposes can require different scores. The PTE requirements finder is a useful starting point with source links—not a substitute for checking your own eligibility.

    Frequently asked questions

Is 1-on-1 PTE coaching better than a group class?

Not for everyone. Mentorship offers more individual attention and an agreed private schedule. A cohort offers broad shared preparation and a regular timetable at a lower group fee. Your needs matter more than the label.

How much does PTE coaching cost at PTE School?

Standard mentorship starts at $120 for one private hour. Five hours cost $350 and 16 cost $800. The Monthly PTE Cohort defaults to $349 early bird or $399 standard for 16 group hours and its separate diagnostic review. All amounts are AUD; check the actual intake and package before paying.

How many private hours do I need?

There is no universal number. Your target, existing report, sample responses and available practice time help the trainer discuss a starting package. Price examples show cost, not the hours required to achieve a score.

How many students join a cohort?

The programme defaults to a minimum of six paid students and a maximum of eight. Check the details of the actual intake. An unpaid hold is not a paid confirmation.

What happens if the cohort does not run?

Paid students choose to move to the next available cohort, use the payment as 1-on-1 credit, or receive a full refund. Contact the team to arrange the choice.

What if I miss a class?

Recordings are included for review. They do not automatically provide a private replacement lesson. Check the timetable before committing.

Is the free session the same as the cohort diagnostic review?

No. The free offer is a 30-minute 1-on-1 PTE strategy session with Hafiz, available as a starting conversation about preparation. The cohort diagnostic review is a separate inclusion for paid cohort members. Neither should be described as a full private coaching package.

Do I need a previous score report to book the free session?

No. Bring one if you have taken PTE before. If you are preparing for your first attempt, bring your required scores, available study times and questions. We do not assume a score you have never received.

Still unsure? Start with a free 1-on-1 PTE strategy session

You do not need to choose a package just because a price table looks attractive. Start with your situation.

In your free 30-minute strategy session with Hafiz, discuss:

    • The scores you need and why you need them.
    • Your latest report, if you have one, or what needs assessing if you are new to PTE.
    • The tasks you find difficult.
    • Your exam date, study availability and budget.
    • Whether mentorship, the cohort or a clearer self-study routine is the sensible next step.

No cost and no obligation. The aim is a clearer decision before you pay.
